The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 set a new quarter-mile record for electric cars at zMax Dragway in Charlotte on Saturday.
The 2,200 hp battery-powered demonstrator ran a 6.87 at 221 mph, making it the quickest electric car to ever run the distance. The time beat the 7.52 set by Steve Huff’s Current Technologies dragster in 2020.
It was also quicker than the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, which posted a 7.623 in 2024 to become the quickest full-bodied electric car.
The Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 features a new body design. It is built to the SFI Spec 25.3D in collaboration with MLe Racecars and is similar to a Pro Mod, according to the NHRA.
Two electric motors mounted under the hood power the rear wheels through a five-speed transmission with a “reverse-acting centrifugal clutch” that allows it to start in gear and slip the clutch during gear changes. It uses a 900-volt electrical architecture and modular battery packs with a combined 32 kWh capacity.
