Pony car fans have a large herd of Ford Mustangs to choose from. There are currently a half dozen distinct models in the lineup and even more trims.
“We love this full spectrum that we have from an EcoBoost through a GT through a Dark Horse, Dark Horse SC to to Mustang GTD and now Mustang GTD competition,” Ford Racing Global Director Mark Rushbrook told American Cars And Racing’s The GAS podcast.
“That full spectrum on one platform makes an incredible statement about what Mustang is, what it is to our customers, that, really, people can can choose what is appropriate for them depending on on what they’re going to do.”
He didn’t even mention the Mustang RTR, which is a drift racing version of the EcoBoost that borrows chassis components form the Dark Horse.

The upcoming Mustang GTD Competition is the new alpha Mustang, having just set a record for street legal American cars at the Nürburgring with a 6:40 lap that blew away the 6:49 mark set by the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X last year.
The current eighth-generation Corvette is entering its eighth year of production with the launch of the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X models, which Corvette chief engineer Josh Holder told The GAS will be the last introduced before the ninth-generation arrives at a yet to be determined date.
The seventh-generation Mustang has only been on sale since 2024, but it is an evolution of the sixth-generation car that debuted in 2015, which suggests it may soon be put out to pasture. But that doesn’t mean Ford is done with it, quite yet.
“We’ve got a lot of great versions of this existing Mustang,” Rushbrook said. “I certainly wouldn’t say no to any further variants off of the existing platform.”

“That’s part of what Mustang is. So, we’re always looking for what that next product is to bring out to the customer what they’re looking for. Everybody wants something different out of their Mustang. Me included. So, certainly look for more to come.”
Rushbrook didn’t offer a hint at what might be on the way, but there have been recent reports that Ford is working on a 4-door Mustang and an off-road Mustang, but it’s not clear if those are intended for the current platform or the one that replaces it.
