Alex Palou Wins Indy 500 Pole

Alex Palou after Indy 500 qualifying

Alex Palou is starting this year’s Indy 500 where he finished last year’s … at the front.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver came out on top during the final Fast Six round of qualifying with a four-lap average speed of 232.248 mph.

Palou bumped ECR’s Alexander Rossi from the top spot and will start alongside him and Team Penske’s David Malukas on the front row.

Felix Rosenqvist, Santino Ferrucci and Pato O’Ward will line up behind them on row two.

Indy 500 qualifying took place over a last-minute compressed schedule on Sunday after rain washed out the planned Saturday round.

All 33 entries were given one shot to set a four-lap average speed and the Top 12 moved on to a second round that set positions 7-12.

Rosenqvist had the fastest times in the first two rounds, while Palou finished 11th in the first round before finding more speed and finishing second in the Top 12.

“I have no words, today, honestly, to have that much speed, we started struggling,” Palou said.

The Indy 500 is scheduled to begin a 12:45 p.m. ET on May 24.

UPDATE: Following the end of qualifying, the No. 4 A.J. Foyt Enterprises car of Caio Collet and No. 24 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing car of Jack Harvey failed their technical inspections and will be dropped from their 10th and 29th qualifying positions to the back of the field.
