4-Door Ford Mustang Revealed … And Han Solo Would Love It

Ford RF Blocker Patent Sketch

Ford is rumored to be working on a four-door version of the Mustang. Not the electric Mustang Mach-E that’s already on sale, but a sport sedan. In fact, it has already designed one that combines the two.

Ford recently applied for a new patent and the submission included sketches of a four-door car with a familiar face. The technology is a front trunk (frunk) for an electric car that includes a hidden storage compartment equipped with an RF blocker.

The patent explains that “this may be particularly advantageous in preventing the detection of the existence of electronic devices stored in the hidden lower storage compartment with the external electronic detection devices to prevent unwanted detection of the cargo.”

While it appears to be intended for property and perhaps data security, it does bring to mind Han Solo and the rest of the Star Wars evading detection by Imperial forces by hiding in smuggling compartments under the Millennium Falcon.

Ford CEO Jim Farley actually referred to the automaker’s now-canceled next generation full size pickup as “the Millennium Falcon with a back porch attached,” but it was never shown publicly.

The patent uses a very different vehicle to illustrate the frunk. The included drawings depict it installed in a sedan with a large rear spoiler and a front end that looks just like a 2010 Mustang’s.

Automakers often use generic or unrelated vehicles in patents in order to protect their intellectual property, so there is no guarantee the RF blocker is even heading for production, let alone if there is a specific model for which it is intended. The car isn’t very detailed, suggesting the artist was just having some fun.

The potential four-door Mustang that Farley reportedly showed to Ford dealers in 2024 is actually expected to be powered by an internal combustion engine, which would not allow for a frunk. Meanwhile, not only doesn’t the Mustang Mach-E’s frunk incorporate the FR blocker or an underfloor compartment, but it was downsized for the 2025 model year to accommodate the addition of a heat pump to improve its efficiency.
