The Tesla Model 3 has held its spot at the top of the Cars.com American-Made Index for the second year in a row. The annual study ranks cars by how much their production impacts U.S. manufacturing.
The study considers the location of the assembly plant; where a model’s engines, transmissions and/or electric motors; come from; how many U.S. workers are employed by its production; and the total percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts. The last one can’t be accurately split up between the two countries due to government reporting requirements.
The Fremont, California-built Model 3 is number one and followed by the Tesla Model Y that is built both in Fremont and Tesla’s Austin, Texas factory for the U.S. market. Last year’s third and fourth place finishers, the Tesla Model S and Model X, have been discontinued. That moved the Ohio-built Jeep Gladiator pickup up from fifth to third, while the Michigan-made Jeep Grand Cherokee is next in fourth.
The Alabama-built Honda Ridgeline pickup and Odyssey minivan are next in fifth and sixth and followed by the Lexus TX 350 and Honda Accord, which are assembled in Indiana and Ohio, respectively. The Ohio-built Acura MDX and Alabama-assembled Honda Passport round out the top 10.
As far as vehicles in the top 100 from other American automakers are concerned, the Ford Motor Company’s highest-ranked model is the Kentucky-built Lincoln Navigator in 12th, while GM’s most American-made vehicle is the Missouri-assembled Chevrolet Colorado pickup in 25th.
