There’s Little Doubt The Tesla Model 3 Is The Most American Car Right Now

The Tesla Model 3 scored a double this year by topping both the Cars.com American-Made Index and the Kogod Made in America Auto Index.

The studies score the impact the production and sale of a vehicle has on the U.S. economy. We previously reported on the Cars.com report, which looks at five major factors, while the Kogod analysis goes deeper and considers 19.

They include where the vehicle is assembled, where its parts come from, where the research and development for it take place, how many jobs it supports and even the profit it generates in the U.S. for the automaker. One caveat with both of these studies is that U.S. and Canadian parts are classified the same and can’t be separated, due to government labeling rules.

The Tesla Model 3 RWD and AWD models finished at the top with a score of 87.5 out of a possible 100. They were followed by the Model 3 Performance, Model Y AWD and Performance, and Model Y RWD at 85 points.

The Cybertruck and now-discontinued Model S scored 82.5, while the Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler Willys with 3.6-liter V6 tied at 81. The Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L all recieved 80.5 scores, which contributed to Stellantis boosting its overall domestic content score from 50 to 60, which was the largest jump this year.

The Ford Bronco with the 2.7-liter V6 option, Bronco Raptor and Ford Ranger, which are all built at the same factory in Michigan on a shared platform, filled out the first 15 spots on the list with an 80-point score that was also achieved by the out-of-production Tesla Model X.

Accounting for ties, Tesla had seven models in the top 10 scores. Even though the Model S and X are no longer available, Tesla might be able to repeat that in 2027 as it is adding production of the new Model Y L and Cybercab at its Austin, Texas, factory this year.
