It’s a million-dollar match.
A 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 with its original engine, transmission and rear axle became the first regular Mustang to be sold for more than $1 million at a non-charity auction during the Barrett-Jackson event in Columbus.
The handful of Mustangs that previously broke the mark were all Shelbys, along with the long-lost 1968 Mustang GT 390 Fastback from Steve McQueen’s “Bullitt” film.
The unrestored car wears its factory Candy Apple Red paint and shows just 4,435 miles on its odometer.
It still has its numbers-matching S-code 429-cubic-inch V8, 4-speed manual transmission and 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle, and even retains its original exhaust system.
The model was largely intended to homologate the engine for NASCAR and formally rated at 375 hp and 450 lb-ft, but known to be much more powerful than that.

The car rolled across the block on a set of stand-in wheels and tires, but the factory-supplied Magnum 500 wheels and Polyglas tires were included with the lot. Its black vinyl and wood interior trim is immaculately preserved.
The bill of sale shows that it sold new for $4,909.26, but it took $1,045,000 to take it home from the auction to set a Boss 429 record.
The all-time auction record for a Mustang stands at $3,850,000 for the Bullitt car, which was sold in 2019 and hasn’t been seen in public since.
