Tesla celebrated its stronger than expected second-quarter sales release by announcing that the Model Y L is coming to America. The three-row SUV was introduced in China last year and will now be built at Tesla’s factory in Austin.
Tesla previously offered a seven passenger version of the Model Y, but it just jammed a third row in the standard body, while the Model Y L gets a seven-inch stretch and unique styling to add space to the third row. Tesla says the windows are also larger for improved visibility.
It is equipped with a six-passenger layout that features second-row captain’s chairs with power armrests and is being offered initially in a Launch Series Premium trim that starts at $63,630. That’s $12,000 more than a two-row Model Y Premium and helps fill the slot in Tesla’s lineup left by the larger and much more expensive Model X that went out of production in May.

The Launch Series Premium trim is rated for 325 miles of range, can accelerate to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and has computer controlled adaptive dampers to improve the ride quality and handling. It comes with a year’s subscription to the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) service, which normally runs $99 per month and deliveries are expected to start in September.
