Happy Ford Mustang Day! Spring has sprung and the Ford Mustang GTD has been back to the Nürburgring.
Ford has revealed the new Mustang GTD Competition, which just eclipsed the original’s ‘Ring time and handily beat the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X in the process.
The new trim features an as-yet-undisclosed power boost to the 815 hp supercharged 5.2-liter V8, a redesigned rear wing, new front dive planes, lightweight magnesium wheels with aero discs and new tires.
Dirk Müller drove it around the Green Hell in just 6:40.835, which was a huge improvement over his 6:52.072 time in the standard Mustang GTD.

The announcement comes on April 17, which marks the anniversary of the original Mustang’s debut at the New York World’s Fair in 1964.
The time also crushed the 1,250 hp Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X’s 6:49.275 lap. Since Chevy did that with an engineer driving, instead of a pro racer, Ford sent one of its own out in the Mustang GTD Competition and he came up just a hair short at 6:49.337.
Both cars are classified in the pre-production/prototype category because they are not yet on sale in Europe, but the Mustang GTD Competition is designed as a street legal model.
Its time is the sixth fastest overall and would be second to the $3 million AMG-One’s 6:29.000 among production vehicles if it were classified as such.
The Mustang GTD Competition can’t come close to Ford’s best ‘Ring time, however, which was set this year by the $1.7 million GT Mk. IV track car at 6:15:977. That’s third-fastest on the list and the fastest for a car without an electrified powertrain, the rear-wheel-drive car relies soley on a 800 hp turbocharged V6.
