Sneak Peek: V8-Powered Dodge Charger SRT

Dodge Charger SRT Rendering

The new Dodge Charger coulda had a V8 and it sounds like it’s getting one.

Stellantis revealed a new product map during its Investor Day presentation last week that confirmed a new Dodge Charger SRT model is in the works.

The Charger is currently offered as the 420 hp R/T and 550 hp Scat Pack, both of which are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline straight-six.

The Charger SRT will sit above them in the lineup and was shown off-camera to journalists at the event.

Many said the engine type was unclear, but the Detroit Free Press reports that it will be a supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8.

We weren’t at the event, but we did see an image of the car and have created a rendering of what to expect. Along with an aggressive front splitter and SRT-style vented hood it also has vents behind the front wheels and a hoop style rear wing inspired by the 1969 Charger Daytona’s.

It’s not clear when a full reveal of the vehicle will happen, or when it will be on sale, but several journalists who were at the recent Ram 1500 Rumble Bee reveal at the Stellantis proving grounds say they saw a prototype being tested on the track, so something might happen soon.

It’s not the only new Dodge performance car on the way. There’s also the all-new Copperhead, which is a “take my money, I must have that,” range-topper, according to the Detroit Free Press.

It has an even bigger wing than the Charger SRT and sleeker styling. Some early reports said it looked like it was based on the Charger, but Tim Kuniskis, head of the American Stellantis brands, including Dodge, told The Drive that the “hyper muscle car” uses an entirely different chassis from somewhere else in Stellantis’ global platform, which raises new questions as there aren’t many front-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars in any of its other lineups beyond Maserati and Alfa Romeo. He also said a powertrain is still being decided on and that it could be something that doesn’t currently exist.
