Reservation holders thinking about confirming their orders for the $24,950 Slate pickup need to keep another figure in mind while working on their budgets.
The startup automaker has confirmed to InsideEVs that the mandatory delivery fee is $1,450, which brings the total base cost up to $26,400. Slate sells direct to consumers, rather than through franchised dealerships.
That still undercuts the $29,990 hybrid Ford Maverick, which many consider its closest competitor, by a significant margin, but the Maverick is also available in a non-hybrid model for $28,990.
The two-door, two-seat Slate features a 181 hp rear electric motor and a battery pack good for 205 miles of range between charges. It famously has manual crank windows and is delivered without a built-in audio system, but offers several accessories to facilitate the installation of bluetooth speakers.

A $5,000 kit is also available that converts it into a five-passenger SUV and packing it with various options can push the price well over $40,000. Slates ship with gray plastic bodies, but a large selection of custom wraps are offered that can be installed by the owner or a professional after purchase.
Slate production and deliveries are set to begin before the end of this year and the company’s factory in Warsaw, Ind., is being built out with the capacity to assemble up to 150,000 annually. The company said it has more than 180,000 reservations, but has not yet confirmed how many have been converted to preorders so far.

Slate has been very open that the price that they quoted was before destination. They have also been very vocal that the Maverick price every outlet quotes is the starting MSRP and you will be hard pressed to find one on a dealer’s lot for that price new or used.
