THE GIST: Ford has named its upcoming electric pickup the Fathom. The compact truck features four doors and seating for five passengers at a $29,945 base price.
Ford’s electric pickup has a name: Fathom.
Many had expected it to revive the Ranchero name, which was considered, but Ford wanted to give it its own identity.
Ford said that Fathom suggests a “vehicle that’s more than it appears to be” and was also inspired by the process of understanding the target customer it was designed for, which isn’t a traditional truck buyer. We can’t help but wonder if Ford hasn’t figured out a way to give it a six-foot bed, but the complete dimensions have not been released. The Fathom is roughly the same size as the Ford Maverick, which has a 4.5-foot bed.
Ford has also confirmed that the base standard-range model will start at $29,945, including the mandatory delivery fee. It hasn’t confirmed the range, but the Fathom will come with rear-wheel drive at that price, while an extended-range battery and all-wheel drive will be options. Ford has previously said that the all-wheel-drive model will be as quick as a Mustang EcoBoost.
All Fathoms will be equipped with the hardware required for Ford’s Blue Cruise hands-free highway driving system, which can be added through a subscription, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.
Unlike its closest competitor, the two-door $26,250 Slate electric pickup, the Fathom will have power windows and a built-in audio system as standard equipment.
The much smaller Slate is scheduled to launch late this year with 205 miles of range and a long list of accessories, including basics like a center console and a $5,000 conversion kit that transforms it into a five-passenger SUV.
Ford hasn’t confirmed a date for the Fathom’s full reveal, but the order books in early 2027 and production is set to begin in Kentucky late in the year.
