Ford is getting back into affordability in a big way. Well, make that a small way.
The automaker, whose current lowest-priced model is the $29,990 Maverick pickup, is planning to launch a new $25,000 SUV by 2029.
That’s what it told dealers at a recent meeting, where it unveiled a new subcompact SUV that resembled the 2001 Escape, according to Automotive News.
It also said that the model will be offered with gas and hybrid powertrain options, the latter keeping with CEO Jim Farley’s previous pledge to have a hybrid version of every model in the lineup by the end of the decade.
Details on where it would be built and what platform it would use were not shared. The Bronco Sport became Ford’s lowest-priced SUV at $33,840 after the Escape was discontinued last year. It is assembled in Mexico on a platform shared with the Maverick and comes standard with all-wheel-drive and outfitted as a “rugged” crossover.
Ford also has a new partnership with Chinese automaker Geely that will include “multi-energy” vehicles built at Ford’s factory in Valencia, Spain. The Ford Kuga, which is the European version of the Escape, is built there today, and Ford is planning to start production of an all-new “multi-engergy” model with the Bronco name there in 2028.
Ford also showed the dealers a four-door Mustang that will arrive around the same time as the SUV with a target price below $40,000, according to the report. That’s around the same time that the two-door Mustang is scheduled to be replaced with an new eighth-generation car.
